"I Love My City" campaign to kick-off in April
LOUISA- A community garden, trash pickup, and sidewalk clean up are projected for discussion at Louisa’s first “I Love My City” campaign meeting.
The event will bring local churches, organizations, and citizens together to discuss beautification and community improvements to be made to Louisa and surrounding areas.
Matt Brown and Lawrence Vinson announced the campaign on a Facebook Live video after this month’s Lawrence County Fiscal Court meeting. In the meeting, a proposal for a needle exchange program received a unanimous “no” vote.
“I wanted to make sure that just because the needle exchange didn’t pass today, those folks to believe in a better Louisa and a better Lawrence County, which I think is most or all of us, don’t get stuck on this decision,” Brown said. “We will move forward because there are people counting on us to do that.”
Vinson and Travis York have suggested bringing awareness to a community garden located on Lackey Avenue that currently is not experiencing much activity. The garden allows for a space for people who do not have room to garden at their own home.
Louisa United Methodist Church is working with the Lawrence County Extension Service to start a community garden of their own, available to anyone who wants to learn how to garden.
Vinson said they would like to see a community gathering.
“[People who come] can learn how to preserve, can, and freeze,” Vinson said. “And we can see that put to good use for people from Louisa and around.”
Mayor Harold Slone has suggested a community trash pick up. Some have proposed pressure washing all of the sidewalks in downtown Louisa.
Community members are encouraged to send their ideas for city beautification and community improvement via e-mail to WhyNotLouisa@gmail.com.
The first “I Love My City” meeting will take place Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m. at the mini park in downtown Louisa.
